By the end
of March, the ski racing season for the Sno*Flakes was wrapped up. The last Open League race for the season
was at Squaw Valley, the home of the 1960 Olympics. It was a thrill to
race on the same hill that hosted the Olympians. Discovering and following the trail of the Men’s
and Woman’s downhill was equally exciting. Squaw Valley is still very much a skier’s
and a non-skier’s destination. Our last season race was on March 14th, a slalom.
Then, we returned on March 27th and 28th for NorCals.
Ron Jorgenson went for the win in Veteran’s, Class 7 at the last Open
League race. He was in good position after the first run, but DQ’ed on his second run…Ohhh!
Keith Wilson came in 3rd. At least the weather was decent.
At NorCals, Ron Jorgenson won his class both days…Congratulations,
Ron! Keith Wilson came in 2nd in his slalom and 1st
in his GS. Well, that felt good after a long season of getting clobbered. One of the
most interesting experiences at Squaw Valley is riding the gondola and the cable car. There are spectacular
views from the long established cable car. It seems that more than half the riders were not even skiers.
These people were there for the experience.
Open League held their Awards Ceremony at Granlibakken,
March 27th. Granlibakken is a nice resort nestled between Tahoe city and Homewood.
It has a small ski hill, condominiums, tennis courts and a pool. The banquet room for the league
was just the right size for our group. It was a great place with great food.
Ron was presented an award for 2nd in Open League,
Veterans Class 7. That is a tough class to win with lots of eager racers, myself (Keith) included.
That wraps up the 2009-2010 racing season.
It is now time for happy spring skiing and resting our weary bones in the warm sun.
